Aldersgate Kicks Off a Four-Part Charlotte History Series.

Aldersgate is 70 – and we are more active, inviting and social than ever.

Aldersgate is 70.

To celebrate this milestone anniversary, we are pleased to host long-time friend of the community and renowned Charlotte historian Dr. Tom Hanchett for a special four-part series – “History Night” – the second Wednesday of each month. The event was kicked off on June 13 with cocktails at 5:30 p.m. and the interactive talk beginning at 6:30 p.m. Dr. Tom gave an interesting overview of the historic forces that tie together Charlotte and its surrounding communities. Our esteemed guest spoke about the Indian trading paths and Colonial settlement, gold mines and cotton mills, banking and booming expansion today. When you look at uptown Charlotte’s modern skyline, it is amazing to learn about the actual and deep history of the Queen City.

The events take place in the new Aldersgate Commons: 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215. If is free, but seating is limited.

Aldersgate offers an array of programming for our elders, but also welcomes the community to special events such as History Night. There’s always something for everyone to enjoy and attend. To get on our Events mailing list, contact us.

Our next History Night is Wednesday, July 11. Come enjoy cocktail hour at 5:30 p.m. followed by the next topic in the series, “Imagining Myers Park.” Learn how one of America’s most important landscape designers transformed a treeless cotton farm into a landmark neighborhood, influential far beyond Charlotte.

On Wednesday, August 8 (same time, same place), look back at Charlotte’s impressive African American “city within a city,” the Brooklyn neighborhood where today’s Government Center now stands. Learn about Biddleville, the historic African American neighborhood bordering Johnson C. Smith University. And hear about exciting developments now underway in both places.

Dr. Tom will finalize the series Wednesday, September 12, with “The Most Interesting Street in Charlotte.” This is Dr. Tom’s most popular Aldersgate talk – a loving look at our own east Charlotte with a spotlight on Central Avenue. Hear history of the elite Charlotte Country Club, evangelist Billy Graham, philanthropist Leon Levine – plus Charlotte’s best bakeries, newest immigrant eateries, and more!

For more information about History Night, other upcoming events and seminars or a personal tour of our beautiful campus and residential offerings, contact Angel Daniel at [email protected] call 704.532.7265. Come see our 231-acre wooded campus – and all the progress of our multimillion-dollar Gateway expansion.
