International Food Festival
The humble sandwich crosses cultures. Two slices of bread (or a wrap) with something in the middle is a food that can be found from Vietnam (the Banh mi) to Venezuela (the arepa). For the fourth consecutive spring, Aldersgate will celebrate its multicultural eastside neighborhood and the most multicultural of foods at a multigenerational, outdoor festival.
On Saturday, April 27 from noon to 6 p.m., the senior living community hosts the Fourth Annual International Sandwich Festival, a community celebration of the sandwich – and of a neighborhood that’s home to a rich mix of residents and authentic global restaurants.
ISF admission and parking are free, and CATS Bus #23 takes guests directly to the festival. Food and drinks may be purchased. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs and spend the afternoon.
The festival brings international flavor and family fun to the front lawn of Aldersgate at 3800 Shamrock Drive. Sammies from around the world – and a rich blend of entertainment curated in part by UNC Charlotte – are part of a celebration that includes Yummi Banh Mi, Hiya, Kat-n-Around, Papi Queso, Marathi Tadka, La Michoacana Authentic Mexican Tacos and Cozy Corner Venezuelan Arepas. In addition to sandwiches, guests can enjoy Caribbean Piraguas Shaved Ice, funnel cakes and Cheerwine samples.
This year’s ISF offers more children’s entertainment than ever. A just-for-kids sandwich-making station, slides, temporary henna tattoos, face-painting and balloon animal-making are all part of the fun. In addition, Growth through Gardening will offer kid-friendly healthy food demos.
Scheduled demos and performances run from 12:15 to 6 p.m. and includes German Oom-pah Band Carolina Camaraden, a turban tying demonstration by the United Indian Community Forum, Reggae Band Mickey Mills & Steel, Rumbao Latin Dance, Voices of Eden Mass Choir, Flavors of India Dance Group, a Nepali dance troupe, Gary Mumford Rhythmology, Afro-Brazilian martial arts by the International Capoeira School and the Reinaldo Brahn Band.
